Secular Sunday
As an Atheist, I think it's important to talk about my non-faith, not only to help encourage other non-believers to find the courage to express their views, but also to dispel the ridiculous and pervasive myths about Atheism. Unlike my Friday Fundays, Secular Sundays will not be written every week; they'll be written whenever one comes to mind.
Secular Sunday XX - Crossing Over
Anyone who claims to be psychic isn't, and although there are some people out there who genuinely believe they have "the gift," there are many others who know full well they're lying to people. Remember how John Edward used to...
Secular Sunday XIX - Charles Darwin Did Not Create the Theory of Evolution
As someone who cares about science, and in particular, as someone who cares about facts and getting things right, there are two main facets of "popular knowledge" regarding the theory of evolution that drive me crazy. The first is when...
Secular Sunday XVIII - Creationism: A Cautionary Tale
Secular Sunday XVII - Secular Season's Greetings
The Christmas season is filled with platitudes wishing you good cheer. When shopping this time of year, many people tell me to have a "merry Christmas." A couple of years ago, I decided that "secular season's greetings" made for a...
Secular Sunday XVI - lolGod
Morah and I were talking about lolcats the other day, and suddenly this idea popped into my head: Also, while doing some searches for other lolGod stuff, I came across this very funny blog....
Secular Sunday XV - El Presidente
Last month, the Spokane Secular Society (formerly the Spokane Atheists) elected me president of the organization. It's definitely an honor, but the position carries with it a certain number of less-than-desirable duties. For example, I am in charge of determining...
Secular Sunday XIV - Spokane's Secular Organizations
Today was a big day for me with regard to Spokane's secular organizations. As some of you know, I'm the organizer of the Spokane Atheists Meetup. Today was our second meeting, but we were also invited to attend the Inland...
Secular Sunday XIII - The New Christian Science Textbook
I saw this on Digg today and it made me laugh. Not the kind of laugh that says, "Oh, ha-ha, what a funny embellishment on the truth this is." No, it was the kind of laugh that says, "Oh, ha-ha,...
Secular Sunday XII - Proof of Accuracy in the Bible
I just read an article about a Notre Dame professor who determined that the star of Bethlehem mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew may have actually been a supernova. His discovery is the result of research into whether or not...
Secular Sunday XI - Christmas
Every year on December 25th we celebrate Christmas. Well, perhaps you don't celebrate Christmas, but I do, along with over half of the population of the world. One popular sentiment is that, "Jesus is the reason for the season," but...
Secular Sunday X - Choose Your Battles
A couple of weeks ago, the City of Spokane agreed to remove crosses from the patches of its police chaplains as part of an out-of-court settlement in a federal lawsuit filed against it. The lawsuit was filed by Ray...
Secular Sunday IX - Mitt Romney's Factual Foul of Faith
Mitt Romeny's nutty pro-Mormon speech pissed a lot of people off (including many Mormons), so in his latest speech, he tried to buy back some faith by lumping all religions together in a war against secularism. His now infamous line,...
Secular Sunday VIII - No God Does Not Mean No Morals
How is any of this constitutional? Why do people continue to assume that all U.S. citizens are Christians, or at the very least, are religious? It amazes me that Alcoholics Anonymous is still the de facto choice for court-appointed help,...
Secular Sunday VII - Jesus, WTF?
I wanted to write another really great Secular Sunday article, but instead I cleaned my desk (and my life is better for it). Instead, I'll just post this picture, which should bring a smile to any atheists' face:...
Secular Sunday VI - Crazy Mel's Church for Nutters
What happened to Mel Gibson? Like Tom Cruise, he used to be pretty cool. I mean, come on, Mad Max? Gallipoli? Lethal Weapon? Braveheart? I liked him as an actor, and when he started directing, I thought he did a...
Secular Sunday V - Your holy water is a terror threat
I laughed out loud when I read this article about French police confiscating holy water from pilgrims at the airport in Lourdes. The Vatican has a new service to shuttle pilgrims from Rome to Lourdes and back. While in Lourdes,...
Secular Sunday IV - The 50 Least Religious Countries
Sweden tops the list of the 50 least religious countries with up to 85% of the population identifying themselves as atheist, agnostic, or non-believer in God (Sweden's population is almost 9 million). The United States is number 44 on the...
Secular Sunday III - Bible Spoiler
I saw this recently and couldn't resist posting it here....
Secular Sunday II - The Creation Museum
This popped up on Digg yesterday and I couldn't pass up sharing it with you. Two Atheists took a trip to the new Creation Museum near Cincinnati, OH. While there, they took plenty of pictures and posted them on Flickr....
Secular Sunday I - Of Sneezes and Other Bodily Expulsions
Welcome to the very first Secular Sunday. Unlike my Friday Fundays, Secular Sundays will not be written every week; they'll be written whenever one comes to mind. I'd like to start off this new series by talking about sneezes and...
